If all you wanted to do was to lighten the picture to reveal more detail, then all I did here was to use the Shadow/Highlight filter in Photoshop (at it's default settings).

Thanks for the corrections.  This started as an exercise.  I will print this special.

BTW- the exif shows an iso 1600 at 1/50 and f 4.0 (max for the lens).  In other words, at the edge.
