Example 6 Solution: Sun Moon Lake:

This solution has a video version

The original image, is another candidate for more contrast and color.

How about a highlight to perk up this image. Dragging the right edge of the Lightness curve immediately blows out the sky detail - no joy here. we leave that end of the curve alone, and move on.

(This is a thresholded image, with the black areas emphasized) The shadow gives us much more wiggle room. We can move the left edge of the curve in almost half way, before the boat becomes a black silhouette, and the shoreline of the island becomes a thin strip of black.

The previous image was theresholded during the drag operation. This is what the image looks like when we release the mouse button. The deeper blacks give the atmospheric tonality (how's that for artspeak!) to the image.

The final lightness curve has a few slight bends in it, to bring out the fog a bit more, and a small tweak in the upper right corner called a lizard's tail. The lizard's tail darkens the sky, and makes the most of the small amount of detail available there.

To bump the colors, we start by moving the saturation slider to the right. This gets us considerable color, and color variation, but the whole image, is too green.

We add a neutral to the image, and move it around until we like what we see. This is a subjective decision, of course, and there is no reason to think that this location of the neutral is any better than anywhere else - it just looks better.

Thanks for watching, and happy curving!
